The backstory I haven't told you about
About a decade into my career as an internal medicine physician, I found myself frustrated. Tasked with addressing a collection of chronic yet non-severe medical issues, my role largely involved prescribing medication rather than implementing holistic cures. This routine didn't allow for addressing underlying issues, especially with limited 20-minute consultations. Patients rarely improved dramatically; instead, they relied on prescriptions that managed rather than cured.
This dissatisfaction with standard practice began to isolate, compounded further when unexpected personal stressors surfaced. My family’s livelihood in turmoil and my own health starting to suffer, I found solace where many patients did: comfort foods laden with sugars.
Food addiction isn’t just a medical jacket I wore during office hours— it loomed large under my own roof, significantly affecting my emotional well-being.
Through personal experience, I observed just how pervasive food addiction was among my patients struggling with chronic diseases. More importantly, it wasn’t solely about what they ate, but why they reached for particular foods.
"They were soothing past traumas with the most available, cheapest drug on the planet: sugar."
The road to true change included committing to intermittent fasting, starting with manageable intervals and progressing beyond—starting from 36 hours and incrementally increasing both frequency and duration. Two core realizations accompanied our journey, showcasing:
- The critical importance of _community and support._
- Developing healthier coping in place of eaten comfort.
Patience and new coping skills lead to progress. Activities like puzzles and nature walks gradually replaced trips to the freezer for cherry nut ice cream. Connection and accountability played crucial roles— reminding me constantly that behaviour patterns are amendable.
This discovery underlines my approach through facilitated learning with others. Through initiatives like the 21-day Metabolic Kick course, I offer structured guidance, much akin to a journey that collectively shapes physiological and mental health, rather than isolating a mere product—parallel novelty to clinical setups confined to individual prescriptions.
