Is This Chinese CGM Any Good? | I tried it for 28 days (SIBIONICS Review)
Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are essential tools in managing diabetes, offering real-time blood sugar levels to patients.
The Sa Bionics CGM, a product from China, has recently gained traction among monitoring devices for its affordability and unique features.
While the device is not yet FDA approved, it is available for purchase in the EU, UK, and several Asian countries. Its pricing competitiveness could make it an attractive option in places with limited access to other brands.
Comparison with industry leaders like Dexcom and Freestyle Libre is crucial for understanding where Sa Bionics stands in terms of size, sensor duration, and data update frequency.
When comparing the Sa Bionics CGM to the Dexcom G6 and G7, as well as the Freestyle Libre 3, the Sa Bionics CGM is more compact than older models but not as sleek as the latest competitors.
- Sa Bionics: 14 days duration, updates every 5 minutes.
- Dexcom G7: Currently updates every 5 minutes, duration 10 days but expected to extend to 14 days.
- Freestyle Libre 3: Updates every minute, 14 days duration.
Over a period of 28 days, the Sa Bionics CGM provided insights into its practical use, including ease of application and day-to-day operations.
The application was straightforward and painless, with a simple app setup. However, the device only supports specific Android and iOS versions.
Users receive updates every 5 minutes; however, alarm systems were overly persistent, alerting every five minutes until levels returned to normal, which some may find overwhelming.
“Sensor durability was impressive, with secure adhesion despite its smaller format.”
Despite its strengths, Sa Bionics lacks integration with insulin pumps and dosing approvals, which might be critical for users prioritizing compatibility and convenience.
While Sa Bionics proves to be a robust option with potential cost savings, particularly in regions with limited access to other brands, it might require syncing to counterpart devices for a more comprehensive diabetes management system until further approvals expand its capabilities.
