What is Lichen Sclerosus?

Lichen sclerosis is a condition that primarily affects genital skin, impacting approximately 1% of the population. However, actual figures may be higher due to widespread underreporting and underdiagnosis. This skin condition is characterized by symptoms such as itching, burning, pain, and tearing of vaginal and vulval tissues. These symptoms can significantly affect quality of life by interfering with intercourse, daily activities, and even the choice of clothing.

The symptoms of lichen sclerosis include:

  • Itching and burning sensations
  • Pain and tearing of affected skin
  • Interference with sexual activity and daily living

This condition is often mistaken for thrush, due to symptom overlap. However, unlike thrush, lichen sclerosis is not caused by an infection, which complicates its diagnosis and treatment.

While the exact cause of lichen sclerosis is not well understood, it is believed to have an autoimmune component. Unfortunately, there is limited research available, complicating efforts to completely understand the etiology of the condition.

The National Health Service (NHS) primarily recommends the use of steroids to manage lichen sclerosis. These medications help stop flare-ups and prevent the condition from worsening.

Since 2015, an alternative treatment, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, has shown promise for those affected by lichen sclerosis. PRP has been noted to rejuvenate tissue and alleviate symptoms, offering relief by potentially reducing flare-ups.

"I’ve been using PRP for lichen sclerosis since 2015 and I’ve seen significant improvements in rejuvenating the tissue and reducing symptoms."
