WORMS In The Mouth! Rare Infestation In The Tongue and Gums 🪱

In a career spanning many years, it's not often that you encounter something truly extraordinary, especially in dental practice. Dr. Joe Neemo from Southfield, Michigan recently faced such a case—a patient with worms in their mouth.

Dr. Neemo recounts his disbelief when a patient arrived complaining of a crawling sensation in her mouth at night, a symptom surprisingly reported by others before. However, as previous examinations did not reveal anything, he did not expect much this time either.

Upon taking a scraping from under the patient's gum, Dr. Neemo was shocked to find evidence of worms, specifically what seemed like pinworms, inhabiting the mouth— _a first_ in his dental career.

Typically, pinworms are not found in the mouth. They may be confused with similar-looking ascarids, which are larger.

  • Pinworms often exit at night, laying eggs around the host environment.
  • These eggs can be ingested, maturing in the intestine and even entering other bodily regions.

Dr. Neemo observed that the worms potentially burrow under the prenatal skin, forming lumps or masses within the mouth.

The patient traced back the infestation to the soil used for transplanting plants imported from Mexico. Dr. Neemo postulated that contaminated soil somehow entered her mouth, tracing the timeline between the importation and the appearance of symptoms.

In terms of treatment, Dr. Neemo prescribed Med Benzol, a common medication for tackling roundworms of this nature.

The case underscores the critical importance of maintaining good oral hygiene. Dr. Neemo emphasized that a healthy mouth is pivotal, as ailments such as these are not only uncommon but unsettling.

Whether you explore unanticipated mysteries or not, attentive oral care is preventive against _many_ maladies.

"Make sure your mouth is healthy; you don't want worms, do you?" - Dr. Joe Neemo
